BARENAKED LADIES!

It’s been…

One week since the season was new,
When they dropped the game to the Angels,
but took the next two.

Three days since the Nats came to town,
Putting up fifteen runs
was what the Reds put down.

Today was the Washington ace,
The Reds slugged out 6 runs
and took the third game.

Now starts games with St Lou,
and it’ll still be three days to see
what the Reds do.

Alright, so a songwriter I am not, but tonight gives us a chance to take a quick look back on the first six games of the Reds 2013 season. On paper, the Reds just took four of six games from the potential favorites (excluding the Reds, of course) for each league.  What does this mean is April: probably little more than a 4-2 record and a little intimidation as other, lesser-thought-of teams face the Redlegs. If these same games were played in late October though – then we’d be on to something.

As a fan of the Reds, I see these first six games as a reason to be stupid-excited for the upcoming 156 games. I know it’s a long season and “it’s a marathon, not a sprint”, but being excited about fantastic baseball in April is a great start to a wonderful summer along the Ohio River (and I’m obviously not talking about Pittsburgh – *spit*).

The Reds proved they could pitch by basically making the Angels stud lineup look like a minor league warm-up team.  People smarter than myself usually say you need three very good pitchers to win in the post-season and Cueto, Latos and Bailey pitched like they were trying to prove they belong on an All-Star roster already. The Reds also proved they can hit as they clubbed a league high 11 home runs and scored the second most runs of any team in baseball.

Where the team was weak in 2012, it seems they are (so far) solid in 2013, namely leadoff and RISP hitting (23 runs scored from ABs that occured with RISP – third highest in baseball). Yes, these stats could be better, but keep in mind that the Reds aren’t playing the dregs of baseball in these games. (I hope yelling “Choooooo!” and “Bruuuuuuuce!” make the “Woooo!” extinct, by the way.)

One tweet I read this weekend read simply “October baseball in April in Cincinnati” (@bustedcoverage – 3:59pm 4/6/13). If that doesn’t sum up what we have been treated to over the past week, I’m not sure what does.

Reds games – watch them – go to them – be loud – make the other team know what playoff baseball is like, even if it’s “only” April”.

…and I apologize to any Canadian readers as I butchered a song from your native sons.
